Educational ProgramsWe work with any club, individual, nature group, school, or library to educate the general public, as well as skunk caretakers, and therefore, hopefully discourage keeping them as pets, and through this, safeguard the lives of these special animals. We feel that to educate is to protect. The Education Program is one of the most important areas of our work! It is only through education of the young people, that safe and humane wildlife management can be established. If we can teach the public, especially the children, that the skunk has a valid place in the environment, then we will save the skunk from eradication. Skunk Orphan Care Class. We teach formula making, proper nursing techniques, caging, cleaning, safety procedures, and record keeping (donation required). Surgical gloves or thin leather gloves are necessary.
S.K.U.N.K.S.' Lil Stinker Club invites any school, classroom, or individual to become a Lil Stinker member. It is a $25.00 annual donation which includes quarterly newsletters, games and contests and a skunk button that says "I'M A LIL STINKER". S.K.U.N.K.S' Lil Stinker activities include skunk art contests, and naming skunk babies. Special Training Classes a. Rescue, Handling and Care of Wild Skunks* This class was designed for animal control and humane officers, trappers, rehabilitators, and any other people who have the occasion to handle wild skunks, with the hope that, once they have a better understanding of this animal, its warning signals and how to avoid getting sprayed, they won't be so quick to kill the skunk and will give them the same chance for life that they do for most other animals. We teach about health concerns, myths versus facts, rescue, trapping, transporting, handling, restraint, emergency feeding, relocating, spraying antidotes, recommendations to pet owners, handling of nuisance calls and why it's important to encourage callers to coexist with skunks. (The video of this class is now available. See Products.) b. Rearing Procedures and Release Criteria for the Striped Skunk* This class was designed for wildlife rehabilitators. We teach about behavior, how the skunk is different from other wild animals, myths versus facts, rescue materials and techniques, handling, relocating, release criteria, quarantine, feeding, recordkeeping, caging and exercise areas, vaccinations, worming and other health concerns. Training. If your unreleasable skunk develops any bad habits, and it sometimes does happen, we will gladly work with you to correct this. If the situation is not corrected, you can place the skunk with us to adjust its attitude and end the problem.* *(There is a fee for these services.)
